I was thankful to be alive and grateful that I did not hurt or kill another person. When the front tire came off it caused extensive damage to my wheel well, front quarter panel hood and numerous other issues. I rushed out of the car to find no tire on my front passenger side and my back tire was halfway off the car. I slowly scrapped my way just off the highway into a parking lot. Scared for my life I pressed the gas hoping the 3 remaining tires would be able to get me to safety. My car dropped onto the rotor and I was stuck perpendicular in the middle of oncoming traffic. My Front passenger front tire came off my vehicle and rolled down the road. Out of my passenger window I could see a tire rolling down the road. When I turned across road (oncoming traffic) I heard a loud bang and the front passenger side of my car dropped to the pavement. I moved into the center turning lane so I could pull in a large parking lot across the street and see what was going on. I made it 500 feet before hearing alarming sounds coming from my car. I pulled out of their parking lot and onto a busy highway. When they were "Finished" they asked me to sign the paperwork and said I was done and could drive away. When I arrived the people working were friendly and appeared to be working on my car with care. Lube and auto care shops are one of many industries that have transitioned towards using walk-on pit covers because of the benefits and superiority to alternative solutions.I went to the Valvoline Instant Oil change in Levittown PA for a routine oil change and tire rotation on November 5th 2018. Custom pit covers we build have numerous application uses in various industries. The covers easily slides along the support rails and resist wear and tear from oil, debris and solvents and withstand the weight of falling objects with minimal deflection. The Hennig pit cover cannister can be located on the either end inside of a pit or, if a pit has stairs, on the stairs-opposing side. We are receiving a growing number of inquiries from auto shops who are interested in pit covers because they are user friendly, easy to operate, and the rigid steel or aluminum construction provides the safest pit protection available. The new outlook on safety prompted auto shops to seek solutions from companies like Hennig, who have a lot of experience in pit safety. Most of them are also difficult to operate as they require manual removal and placement. For example, these solutions do not provide a stable walking service, and they do not have the ability to support a load. All of these are generally affordable products however, they have significant weaknesses that prevent them from serving their intended purpose: safety. A variety of solutions to prevent the falls are still offered on the market, including fiberglass grate, metal grate systems, nets, or webs. The best option in the past, besides frequent employee training, was fencing off or completely covering the service pit when not in use. They are very easy to fall into, especially when combined with oil spills, objects to trip over, and the movement of vehicles over the pit regularly. One of the main hazards, unique for oil change shops, are open pits. OSHA General Industry Code 1910 recommends preventative measures to ensure a safe working environment, “free from recognizable hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious harm.” OSHA regulations and laws that dictate workplace conditions are becoming stricter each year. The difference from the lube shops of the past is that today there are exponentially more regulations in place to protect employees and visitors from hazards. Even in new and modern shops, which are largely safe places to work, incidents of falling into pits still occur. Covered pits are not frequently seen at these types of facilities. When one thinks of a traditional car garage scene, an open service pit is almost always a part of the picture. Switchgear Enclosures & Electrical Housings.
